"On May 28, 1945, General A.W. Kissner, Chief of Staff, 21st Bomber Command, wrote to General Keller Rockey, Fifth Marine Division, that every bit a token of abide by together with appreciation of the peachy contribution made past times the Fifth Marine Division inward the taking of Iwo Jima; they desired to refer a novel B-29 for the them, together with to inscribe the Division Insignia on the plane.
Our crew was selected for this honour together with crew 11A was proud to bring a novel send named “The Spearhead”. The brass of the Fifth Marine Division together with the ninth BG got together together with had a dedication ceremony on Tinian, August 17, 1945.
About 100 Marines including their band took part. “The Spearhead” also took purpose inward the ceremony. All inward all, it was fun, together with since our crew led many missions, “The Spearhead” was an appropriate name. Its ii waist gunners were twins (Burton together with Langdon Dyer) together with every bit far every bit I know, were the solely twins to wing fight missions together."
